Under the Bridge

"Sometimes I feel
Like I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel
Like my only friend
Is the city I live in
The city of angels
Lonely as I am
Together we cry(...)"

I think everybody knows this song by Red Hot Chili Peppers. And maybe its video.

As for me, it makes me think of the city I live in... No, not the city of angels... Just Bucharest, with its personal angels and demons.

When I think of Bucharest, I think of home, friends and places I like here. I think of Lipscani, Calea Victoriei, Magheru Boulevard and Universitatii Plaza. These are my favorite areas in this city, the city I was born in, studied, where I am working and living in. I can walk for hours down these streets, taking pictures, looking at the people passing by and just feeling good. It doesn`t matter if it`s Summer or Winter, night or day. Nothing seems to change here. I think Bucharest can challenge any metropolis from the architectural and cultural standpoints, not to mention its specific atmosphere... A friend of mine, who travelled around the world, told me it looks very much alike Rome. A former colleague of mine, a person in love with traveling and getting in touch with new people, cultures and civilizations, says that the most European place in Bucharest, the one reminding him of the big cities he visited all around the continent, is Calea Victoriei, with its mixture of old and modern buildings, cozy cafes and restaurants, museums, etc. After work, he would just take his backpack, turn on his iPod and, hands in his pockets, he would take a long walk down this street, just gazing at the people and enjoying a nice evening in Bucharest. I use to do that, too, during week-ends and all I can say is that the feeling is good...

Life seems very limited to me sometimes (I mean, what can you do when you come back from work on an ordinary day, for example?) and the only way to clear my mind is to simply go out in the city, walking and taking photos or to go for a drink. If I choose the latter, then the place I am going to with my friends is definetly Amsterdam Cafe in Lipscani area or Cafeneaua Actorilor near Bucharest National Theatre. Of course there are always other options, but these are the top of the list. In Summer, however, the first choice is La Motoare, the open air place on the same Bucharest National Theatre. What I like about all these places I mentioned is the atmosphere, especially the one created by the people coming here, then that of the space itself, the music, ok, maybe even the menu... :) The fact is, eventhough I get easily bored in general, I can`t say that I am bored of coming here over and over again...

"It's hard to believe
That there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe
That I'm all alone
At least I have her love
The city she loves me
Lonely as I am
Together we cry(...)"
